(a Mark Coykie editorial entry after reading the book Very British Problems)&nbsp; Chapter One: The Spark - A Swipe of FateRight, let’s be brutally honest: neither of us were looking for a husband when we both swiped right on Tinder back in July 2021. We matched when Coykie was flying to Chicago and Nick to New York. Took us weeks of flirty messages and pictures that won’t be shared here before we finally met IRL. I think Mark just needed someone to vent to about corporate life, and Nick, as a Clinical Psychologist, probably saw him as a fascinating case study. We were both absurdly busy in Dubai, Nick was setting up his fancy wellness company, and I was drowning being Learning &amp; Development finance bro. Naturally, we rarely had time for each other, but we tried to make it anyway. Our first date, dinner and cocktails at the chic and trendy Americano Bar, was supposed to be a quick polite drink. It quickly devolved into hours of laughter and, despite being from opposite sides of the world, realising we actually had everything in common: music, festivals, a mutual inability to resist a good dance, and, most importantly, food. The digital match was far too successful. Dubai was the backdrop for Chapter One, but we knew it wasn't the final destination.&nbsp; Chapter Two: The Test - Dubai to Europe (The Real Marathon)We quickly established a shared dream: a better life outside the desert, ideally somewhere with less sand and more decent pubs. However, life, as it often does, had other ideas. Thanks to the usual bureaucratic faff of visas and careers, Nick made the first dash back to Go West (cue Pet Shop Boys) in January 2023. This kicked off a deeply irritating year of long-distance love. Three thousand miles, a time difference that made scheduling calls a nightmare, and endless baggage fees. It was a proper test of stamina. We tried to sweeten the deal with bi-monthly trips (mostly just so we could escape the incessant video calls), proving that our dedication was thankfully stronger than the Jet2 flight schedule. We were committed, we were honest (Nick being British helped here, as his default setting is sarcasm and Mark has a master’s degree on complaining), and we discovered our bond was utterly unbreakable. A year apart is a rubbish way to spend your time, but it sorted the men from the boys.&nbsp; Chapter Three: The Climax - Why Wait? The Glastonbury ProposalEven while living on different continents, we committed to maximum chaos and fun. Our grandest reunion was our pilgrimage to the hallowed, muddy grounds of the Glastonbury Festival in June 2023.&nbsp; With the sun not going down on us over the Pyramid Stage, and the absolute legend Sir Elton John began his farewell gig, the moment hit Mark, with the force of a dodgy festival cider. He thought, "We're not getting any younger, and frankly, we’ve already proven we can survive a year of long-distance, so what are we waiting for?" Waiting for a ‘perfect moment’ felt ridiculous. This, surrounded by music, cider and mates, was as perfect as it gets. At the very start of the gig, I turned to Nick, put on knee down on the hallowed turf of Worthy Farm, and proposed. He barely got the ring out (that we made there that day) before the crowd cheered, and thankfully, Nick shouted YES!&nbsp; Chapter Four: Together in Electric Dreams - London!Just a few short months later, the great escape was complete. Mark, managed to officially close the 16-year chapter of working and living in Dubai and made the monumental, terrifying leap to Clapham Old Town, London. I landed with the princess of course, Samantha Jones, and we were finally, permanently, a family unit. We had traded the blinding desert sun for the comforting grey of London (who would’ve though Mark loves overcast and grey skies over sunny summer), a truly inclusive city where we immediately felt we could thrive, be accepted, and finally stop explaining time zones.&nbsp; Highlights:May 2024: We bought a ridiculous amount of colourful furniture and finally settled into Clapham, London where everyone is aggressively 28 years old and works in finance with a cockapoo as a companion.June 2024: We revisited the scene of the crime at Glastonbury, thankfully without the pressure of having to propose this time.December 2024: Our first proper British Christmas. We’ve earned it.&nbsp; Finale:Five years after that first swipe and just shy of three years after that emotional long-distance challenge, we have managed to pull it off. We're exactly where we’re supposed to be, together in our city, ready for a massive celebration. And so, to the grand finale! We wouldn't have made it through the long-distance, the visas, or the sheer horror of packing up our lives without you lot. Thank you for being our allies, our friends, and our amazing family.&nbsp;After five years, two continents, and far too many Zoom calls, we can’t wait to finally cement this ridiculous journey. The only hues strictly forbidden are black and white. It's a festive day for life, light, and laughter, not monochrome formality. Our third pick, most likely because BBC is practically next door to Oceanica Resort, and they both share the same gloriously sprawling white beach. It marks the shoulder season, meaning we’re escaping the worst of the monsoon. Expect glorious sunshine, followed by dramatic, short-lived tropical downpours. Highs hover around a rather sweaty 29°C to 32°C, so leave the tweed at home. 2. Pick a place that suits your budget and your required distance from the chaos. Where exactly is this marriage taking place?The entire theatrical spectacle, both the initial ceremony and the ensuing reception will unfold at the rather lovely Mithi Resort and Spa on Panglao Island. Check the Home and RSVP pages, as they are updated with military precision. Must I attend everything, or can I just turn up for the free food?We’d be delighted to have you at all of our weekend shindigs, but attendance is, of course, optional. However, we insist that you RSVP for the Wedding Day so we don't accidentally starve you. Will the ceremony be a sweaty, sunburnt affair?The ceremony is staged on a small, charming islet, a short hop from the beach. You will absolutely require sunscreen. We politely request that you refrain from bringing large umbrellas to the islet unless the heavens open, in which case a spot of dignified British queuing under an umbrella is mandatory. The reception, thankfully, will be indoors in the Mithi main pavilion, air conditioning permitting. Am I invited to the rest of the weekend's festivities?Yes, you lucky thing! All guests are heartily invited and welcome to register for all the scheduled events. Just ensure you RSVP to everything you plan on attending, as our planners are terribly particular about seat counts. 3. It saves us a rather awkward headcount later. Are small humans permitted?Indeed. Children are very much invited to join the celebratory pandemonium. We have even gone to the immense trouble of allocating them a dedicated kids' section at the reception, featuring appropriately low tables where they can comfortably plot mischief together. Your attendance is the greatest gift, naturally, but we won't stop you from being generous. Pre and Post Wedding Shenanigans I'm a seasoned traveller coming over a few days before the wedding and planning to spend a full fortnight gallivanting across the islands. What, pray tell, should a chap (or chapette) get up to before and after the main event?Well, aren't you the adventurous one? Two weeks, you say. That's practically a lifetime in paradise! The options are as plentiful as biscuits at a vicar's tea party. If you're landing in Manila and assuming you haven't managed to bypass it entirely like a sensible person trying to avoid a bank holiday traffic jam, you'll need a couple of days to shake off that jet lag. It's a rather aggressive sort of tiredness, you see. While you're there, you might as well pop over to Intramuros for a look at a proper old Spanish fortress and some churches. It's rather historic, a bit like visiting your great-aunt Mildred's attic. If you're feeling particularly lucky, or perhaps just reckless, you can try to win back the cost of your plane ticket at the casinos. Or, if you're a proper city-slicker, the trendy, Michelin-worthy (or so we're told) restaurants in Makati and BGC are absolutely worth the faff. If you're still not emotionally prepared to face the wedding island of Bohol, we strongly suggest you fly directly to our absolute favourite: El Nido in Palawan. This is a smashing route because, delightfully, El Nido has direct flights to Panglao (the airport for Bohol). Think dramatic limestone cliffs, lush jungle, beaches so white they're practically glowing, and snorkelling/scuba diving that'll make your jaw drop. It's a magnificent place to lose yourself for a few days. You can rough it in a charming budget hut, or if you've got the necessary funds, book a luxury cliff-side accommodation where a private, 24/7 butler will ensure you don't even have to lift a pinky to pour your own G&amp;T. Upon Landing in the Wedding Locale (Panglao &amp; Bohol)Once you've touched down on Panglao Island (which is handily connected to the larger island of Bohol by a bridge), there's still plenty to fill your schedule if you're not quite ready to socialise with the rest of the wedding rabble. If you fancy a spot of proper peace and quiet, we highly recommend renting a car, it'll set you back about £60 a day, and motoring up to the remote, relatively virgin beaches in the north: the beautiful area of Anda. Big and boutique resorts are ready to cater to your needs up there, offering glorious solitude away from the slightly, shall we say, over-populated areas of Panglao. On your drive across Bohol, do make a point of stopping off at a few waterfalls. Just a word of caution: there's a Kawasan Falls Bohol, which is not to be confused with the other one in Cebu. They've very sensibly decided to have one of their own. Once you feel you've adequately cleansed your palate of reality, head south and get yourself ready for the wedding socials! If you still have a few hours to spare on Panglao, why not try the utterly mesmerising sardine run swim? The great thing about the Philippines is that there's always a friendly local chap who'll happily capture truly amazing, professional-level shots of you underwater. If scuba diving is more your thing, you'll be spoiled for choice, as Bohol is famously home to dolphins, sea turtles, and whale sharks. Right, the wedding was a triumph, and now it's Sunday afternoon. We're waving goodbye to the happy memories and the hangover. Where on earth do we gallivant off to for the remaining two weeks of our island adventure?Well done for surviving the celebrations! You've made it to the glorious part: the 'rest of the holiday' bit, which, as we all know, is the true reward for enduring small talk and questionable dance moves. The newly-minted married couple have, quite splendidly, offered up their personal favourites. It's like a posh tasting menu, only with islands! You have a few magnificent choices for the next leg of your journey: Siargao: The undisputed surf and food capital of the Philippines. If you fancy yourself as a bit of a wave-rider (or just want to watch the beautiful people who do), this is your spot. Expect a laid-back, hip vibe, perfect for chilling out or chasing waves. Siquijor Island: Ah, the mysterious, rustic 'black magic' island. Don't fret, it's far more charming and less spooky than the name suggests. It's brilliantly low-key and less developed, making it ideal for quiet beach time and chasing waterfalls. Cebu Island: If your post-nuptial energy is still high, head here for pure, unadulterated adventure. Canyoneering and waterfalls are the main event! The famous Kawasan Falls will see you jumping, trekking, and swimming through bright blue canyons for hours of adrenaline-fuelled fun. Boracay Island: The old reliable. Now, listen closely: this island has had a bit of a spruce up. It closed for a while, had a major clean-up, and is now running a tighter ship. The sand is still powder-soft white, the water is crystal-clear, and it's still undeniably impressive, just be sure to check the new regulations before you go!
